GSG Grant Programs

The Graduate Student Government recognizes that a fundamental way in which it can support graduate students is through various grant/fellowship programs to promote research, travel, and graduate life. We are always interested in feedback on our grant programs, to ensure they are meeting the needs of Mines graduate students. Please contact a GSG Council Member if you have ideas for new grant programs or improvements to existing grant programs.



OGS Graduate Continuance Fellowship*

Statement of Purpose: Colorado School of Mines graduate students, in thesis-based degree programs, are often funded by teaching and research assistantships that include a stipend and typically cover the cost of tuition, fees and health insurance. At times, a funding source may suddenly be eliminated or prove to be insufficient to cover the student through the end of their studies. If the student or advisor have no other financial resources available, the student may not be able to continue their studies. The purpose of this grant program is to provide last resort assistance for graduate students in such cases.

The Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) provides a one-time fellowship as “completion” support, for thesis-based students who are in their final semester. Depending on availability of funds, the continuance fellowship is designed to cover up to one semester of tuition, fees, and individual health insurance. Students who are awarded a Graduate Continuance Fellowship are not eligible to apply for the fellowship again within their current degree program. Applications for completion funding are accepted for fall, spring, and summer.

Eligibility: Potential applicants must be enrolled part- or full-time in a thesis-based Masters or Doctoral graduate program at the Colorado School of Mines, and must be in “good standing” with the University. Eligible students must have received continuous funding, in the form of a teaching assistantship, research assistantship, or fellowship, for ALL academic semesters (excluding summer terms) without interruption prior to the date of application. M.S. students must have completed all required coursework (excluding research credit) for their degree and Ph.D. students must have successfully defended their Thesis Proposal; both M.S. and Ph.D. students must demonstrate that they are highly likely to graduate within 6 months of the application date.

Application Information/Deadlines: Applications should be addressed to the Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies and turned into the Office of Graduate Studies (1600 Jackson St - Suite 150). Late applications will only be considered under extenuating circumstances. Applications will be reviewed for eligibility and completeness by the Assistant Dean. The final decision will be made by the Graduate Dean based on available funds. Advisors will be asked to cost-share if possible. Advisors who have had students who received support from this program within the past two years have lower priority, especially if the Advisors were unable to cost-share.

OGS Continuance Grant Application AY18-19

Submission Deadlines:
Applications for Spring 2019 must be submitted on or before December 17, 2018
Applications for Summer 2019 must be submitted on or before May 13, 2019



The GSG provides two tiers of travel support, covering meeting attendance as well as presenting at conferences. Grants may be combined for use at a single event, and an additional $250 is available for presentations at international conferences. Acceptance of a GSG travel grant requires completion of a Conference Report within 30 days of travel. If interested in applying, please complete the Travel Grant Application. Meeting Attendee Travel Grant ($200)

Graduate students are eligible to receive one Meeting Attendee Travel Grant per degree program (e.g. MS or Ph.D.), and the funds may be applied toward attending or presenting at a conference or professional meeting. Students may apply for grants at any point in the academic year.

Presenter Travel Grant ($500)

Graduate students are eligible to receive one GSG Presenter Travel Grant per degree program (e.g. MS or Ph.D.), and the funds may be applied only toward presenting at a conference or professional meeting. Students may apply for grants at any point in the academic year.  

Please Note: Each type of grant will only be awarded once per degree program. Before you apply, please be sure you will attend the conference/meeting for which you plan to apply the grant to.

Family Assistance Grant ($625 / semester)

The Family Assistant Grant is designed for graduate students with families and need assistance meeting the burdens of healthcare or child care expenses. Applications are reviewed and awarded twice per year: once in September and once in February. Please note that this application may take up to one week to complete. Applications for the Spring 2018 semester must be physically delivered to the Office of Graduate Studies (1600 Jackson St - Suite 150) January 24, 2018.

GSG Lecture Series Grant ($1,500 maximum)

The Colorado School of Mines GSG is committed to supporting opportunities that better the academic graduate experience, including on-campus academic programming. To apply for funding from the Graduate Student Government, the proposed lecture should benefit and enhance CSM graduate research. Requests will be evaluated on an individual basis, and emphasis will be given to initiatives that (1) reach the most graduate students; (2) further the research experience or opportunities of graduate students; and (3) promote CSM's Institutional Values and Principles for graduate education. Overall, grants will be awarded for lectures which reach multiple research groups within the campus.

The Lecture Series Grant application requires authorization from both the GSG Department Representative and your local Department Head. Please click here to download an application. Completed applications may be scanned and emailed to Andrew Proudian (; GSG President). Applications will be considered by the GSG Council, and applicants will be notified within three (3) weeks of the Council's decision. In submitting an application, the submitter agrees to work with the department to secure all travel arrangements for the presenter; the GSG will be responsible for room reservations, food, and event marketing.
